Futon Beds
It's more than a bed, a couch or a daybed, it's a futon! A fun and versatile option, the futon's unique design originated in Japan. The Japanese “shikibuton” (floor cushion) has evolved into the popular futon of American culture. Today's futons come in a variety of styles and options to fit any decorative style.
Frames
There are a number of futon frame styles on today's market. A few popular choices include Mission, Sleigh, Contemporary and Trellis options. Each of these are constructed using hardwood, oak, pine or metal. The frames come in many colors and finishes. There are also futon bunk beds which provide even more sleeping space.
Mattresses
Choosing a mattress is a matter of personal preference. Like traditional bed mattresses, futon mattresses come in several levels of firmness. There are soft, medium, and extra firm options and some manufacturers provide a durability rating. Mattresses are made of a variety of materials including cotton, wool and foam and some models also include supportive coils.
Covers
If you want your mattress to endure the test of time, then use a cover. Futon covers come in many fabrics and fashionable styles. Many covers also feature matching pillows and bolsters. Changing the futon cover is easy and makes a great way to redecorate. In most cases, changing the cover is simply a matter of unzipping it and pulling it off. Some interior decorators suggest changing the covers with the seasons for a fun and festive new look. Many covers are machine washable and some are spot-clean only.
Futons make a convenient, convertible bedding and seating option. They're great when used as a couch or they make a perfect bed for overnight guests. If you're looking for a practical piece of furniture that is attractive, versatile and has remained popular for generations, a futon is all of that and more. |
